Surprise, Ariz.- Despite a 5 pm scheduled match time for Lynn University's seventh-ranked women's tennis team, the Blue & White finally took to the courts for its first national championship appearance in three years, and 17th overall at approximately 9:30 pm local time. The Fighting Knights advanced to the second round at the NCAA Division II National Championships with a 5-1 win over No. 29 Queens (N.Y.) late Wednesday night. Lynn improves to 20-4 overall and will face top-ranked Armstrong (30-0) at 1 pm. Fans can follow the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com.
Lynn took a 1-0 lead when Rosalie Willig and Kim Przeszlowski defeated Sumeera Kamil and Angelika Sobiecka, 8-4. Martina Gledacheva and Grace Mpassy trailed 2-5 at No. 3 doubles but rallied to win the next six games taking the match, 8-5, from Cami Abdaullah and Aylin Mehter.
Lynn's 2-1 lead after doubles fueled the Fighting Knights with momentum. No. 28 Willig was the first to finish in singles defeating 32nd-ranked Plevako, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Blue & White a 3-1 advantage in the match.
"It is tough to play after waiting all day so we were all kind of tired," said Willig. "Kim and I won at No. 1 doubles which was good to set the tone of the match for our team. In singles we played really strong and I had a tough opponent but I am glad we won and we are looking forward to our next match tomorrow."
Gledacheva won 6-4, 6-4, over Samson to put the Fighting Knights within one point of victory. Minutes later Cuevas sealed the deal at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kamil.
The Fighting Knights reach the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 17th time in program history following Wednesday night's victory. Lynn's match vs. Armstrong is slated for 1 pm (MST) and live stats can be found here.
