Women’s Tennis Falls to Top-Ranked Armstrong in National Quarterfinals

Surprise, Ariz.- Lynn University's women's tennis team fell to top-ranked Armstrong (31-0), 5-0, in the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club on Thursday afternoon. The Pirates undefeated season continues as they head to the national semifinals to face the winner of Midwestern State/Southwest Baptist on Friday. Lynn's season comes to an end at 20-5. The seventh-ranked Blue & White reached the national tournament for the 19th consecutive season and the quarterfinals for the 17th time in program history.

 

Armstrong took a 1-0 lead when No. 20 Nicole Fossa and Carolina Prats-Milan defeated Carolina Cuevas and Alina Jane at the middle of the lineup, 8-1. No. 1 Lena Lutzeier and Clara Perez defeated Rosalie Willig and Kim Przeszlowski, 8-3, at the top of the lineup to extend the Pirates' lead to 2-0. Minutes later Alejandra Cisnerors and Diana Stomlega took down Martina Gledacheva and Grace Mpassy at No. 3 doubles. Midway through the match the Fighting Knights and Pirates were tied 4-4 but Cisneros and Stomlega outscored Lynn 4-1 to take the match 8-5 completing the doubles sweep.

 

No. 28 Rosalie Willig lost 6-1, 6-1, at the top of the lineup to fifth-ranked Lena Lutzeier, which put AASU ahead 4-0 and one point away from advancing to the national semifinals. Gledacheva fell 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 singles spot to No. 12 Clara Perez.

 

Lynn finishes the season 20-5 overall after reaching the national quarterfinals for the 17th time in program history and first time in three years.
