Women’s Tennis Starts Strong at USTA/ITA South Regional

Pensacola, Fla. – Lynn University's women's tennis team saw plenty of success on opening day of the USTA/ITA Division II South Region Championships on Friday, advancing three single players and both of its doubles tandems into the third round. The University of West Florida is hosting the four-day event at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on the campus of UWF, and also at the Roger Scott Tennis Center in Pensacola, Fla.

In singles action, No. 7 seed Rosalie Willig and Martina Gledacheva received byes in the opening round before toppling their first opponents. Willig breezed through UWF's Sarai Flores (6-0, 6-2), while Gledacheva fought back after dropping the first set against Barry's Kimmy Twelkev (2-6, 6-3, 10-8).

Diana Bogolii only surrendered six games over two matches in her first action wearing the blue and white uniform, defeating both Valeria Nagovitcina from Palm Beach Atlantic (6-2, 6-1) and Saint Leo's Anastaia Wagner (6-3, 6-0). Grace Mpassy opened up her season with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory over Mississippi College's Katie Cooke before falling to Sabrina Kierberg of Nova Southeastern (6-3, 6-4).

The duo of Bogolii and Willig earned the No. 3 seed in the doubles draw, advancing to the quarterfinals after an 8-2 triumph over Anna Gotz and Paula Ortiz Couder (Embry Riddle). Mpassy and Gledacheva teamed up to take down Bea Morales and Sabrina Schmidt (Valdosta St.), 8-2, before defeating UWF's Giovanna Patitucci and Valeria Mantilla, 8-6.

Action resumes Saturday, Sept. 26 with third-round singles play at 8 a.m.
