Volleyball Continues Academic Success

Lexington, Ky. –  The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced today that 478 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 season with Lynn University earning the honor for the sixth- straight year.

The volleyball program tallied the best team GPA of all the 11 Fighting Knights teams with a 3.71 mark for the 2010-11 academic year.  Additionally, four players tallied a perfect 4.0 GPA while eight others collected GPAs of 3.5 or better.

On the court, the Blue and White amassed a 21-10 record and tied for third place with an 11-5 finish in Sunshine State Conference play. The squad also took their first NCAA Regional win since 2007 with a five-set thriller over the Barry Buccaneers.

The Rollins Tars and Florida Southern represented the only other SSCschools to receive the award.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

"A hearty congratulations to all the volleyball coaches whose teams won the 2011 AVCA Team Academic Award," said AVCA Executive Director, Kathy DeBoer. "Teams do not succeed in the classroom by accident any more so than they do on the court.  The same coach who taught them volleyball skills cared enough about their academic achievement to gather their grades, calculate their GPA, and submit a nomination on their behalf. In doing so, these coaches sent a clear message that classroom success is just as important as court success.  All involved should celebrate this award!"

The volleyball team is set to start their season on Friday, September 2, in the friendly confines of the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center at 9 a.m. against Kentucky State in the Courtyard by Marriott Volleyball Classic.
