BOCA RATON - Despite a match-high 15 kills by sophomore Chelsey Semprini, the No. 3 Tampa Spartans defeated Lynn University's volleyball team in straight sets (25-11, 25-19, 32-30) to spoil LU's Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center.
The Fighting Knights fall to 19-8 and 10-4 in the Sunshine State Conference while Tampa clinched the SSC title with a 24-3 record and 13-1 in conference play.
Semprini hit .469 for the match with a season-high 15 kills on 32 swings with zero errors. Senior Kala Abdell was the only other Fighting Knight with double digit kills as she posted ten o the day. Senior Devon Woolard collected 36 assists and 12 digs for a double-double.
Defensively, senior Lacy Redwine led the way with 15 digs while Abdell and Haley Pratt tallied three blocks apiece.
Tampa hit .545 in the first and .410 in the second to take a 2-0 set lead before a deciding set.
Semprini recorded nine kills and got help from Abdell as Lynn outhit Tampa .242 to .219 in the third set. The decider featured 19 ties and nine lead changes as Lynn had set-point opportunities at 26-25 and 29-28. After a pair of kills gave the Spartans a match-point at 30-29, a kill by Semprini tied the score at 30. However kills by Jessica Yingling ad Danielle Selkridge would clinch a Tampa victory.
The Spartans outhit the Fighting Knights .336 to .203 for the match and out blocked Lynn nine to five.
