Volleyball Serves Up a Victory a la Mode

BOCA RATON, Fla. – With just two games left in the regular season Lynn University's volleyball team came up with a five-set victory over Florida Tech 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, 25-12, 15-12. The Fighting Knights were able to record 11 service aces led by Brianna Cox with 18 kills on a .531 clip. Shannon Dugan and Abbey Brokop both tallied double-doubles; Dugan with ten kills and ten digs while Brokop had 55 assists and 14 digs in the victory. With the win Lynn improves to 15-12 and 5-10 in the Sunshine State Conference while Florida Tech drops to 15-14 and finishes SSC play with a 5-11 record.

Cox set the standards early for Lynn starting off the match with a kill from Brokop. The opening set remained a two point game until a 5-0 run for the Fighting Knights, lead by Dugan and Angie Caple who each had two kills, gave them set point.

In the second set, the two teams flip flopped the score for the first half. The Blue & White hit a match-low .176 in the set but still saw themselves down 24-23 before a Panther's kill evened up the match, and eventually take the set by a two point margin.

Florida Tech would control the lead for the entire third set to put Lynn in a 1-2 hole. Despite having multiple unanswered runs, the Fighting Knights could not recover from the 3-9 deficit they faced in early in the set.

With the game on the line Lynn dominated Florida Tech in the forth set to force a fifth for their second straight game. The Panthers hit a negative .154 in the set while the Fighting Knights had four service aces, two of them back-to-back from Dugan in a 6-0 run that ended the set. Lizzy Raffa and Dugan both recorded kills in the set-ending run.

The final set Lynn hit a match-high .381 clip while only producing two errors in the deciding set. For the second time in the match Cox started off the set with a kill and would do it again three points later to tie the set at 2-2. Brittany Brown had two kills in the set, one of them being the game-winning kill.

The Fighting Knights conclude the 2012 season on November 17 at 4 pm hosting Rollins College in a Sunshine State Conference matchup. As it is the last home match Lynn Athletics will honor seniors Brianna Cox, Brittany Brown, Darian Weppner, Michelle Jordan, and Abbey Brokop before the first serve.
