BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's volleyball team took full advantage of its home court by sweeping the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 25-16, 25-18, 26-24 in the final match of the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational. With the win, Lynn improves to 7-1 on the season and UPR-Mayaguez falls to 2-2. The shutout marks the fourth straight sweep for the Fighting Knights.
Right from the beginning, the Blue & White dominated the Bulldogs with an Abbey Brokop service ace to start the match. The Fighting Knights would score the first four points and take an early 8-3 lead. UPR would later tie it up at 10-10 before another Lynn run ended the match 25-16.
Along with her ace, Brokop had 11 assists and a kill. Angie Caple led the squad with four kills in the set and Shannon Dugan paced the defense with seven digs.
Similar to the first set, the Bulldogs kept it close in the early goings but the Fighting Knights proved to be too much to handle. An early 4-0 run with the game tied 2-2 gave LU the lead and it never looked back. Angie Caple produced four kills for the second straight set with a .800 kill percentage. Chelsea Hanson made her first appearance for Lynn in the set and tied with Michelle Jordan with five digs.
The match-ending set proved to be the toughest for the Blue & White as the UPRM was able to get one set point opportunity before Lynn came back to win the contest 26-24. It was a back and forth battle with neither team able to capture a large lead. Brittany Brown had two kills in the final seven plays to end the match.
Brown had six kills on seven attempts for a .857 kill percentage and Lizzy Raffa contributed five in the set. The setting-duo of Brokop and Mandy McIntosh each had seven assists in the final game and Jordan had four digs.
Jordan had a team-high 12 digs overall while Shannon Dugan and Raffa each had seven. Brown led the offense with 12 kills and Caple had a game-high .636 kill percentage. Brokop notched 26 assists with McIntosh adding 11.
This marked the finale of the Courtyard by Marriot Invitational hosted by Lynn University. The Fighting Knights made it through the tournament with a 4-0 record, tying them with Florida Southern, who also went undefeated. Puerto Rico Mayaguez and Valdosta State each logged 2-2 records while Clark Atlanta and Assumption went 1-3 apiece.
For their performances in the Courtyard by Marriot Michelle Jordan, Lizza Raffa, and Brianna Cox were named to the All-Tournament team.
Others named to the All-Tournament team were Chelsea Luttfring and Tania Tauiliili from Valdosta State, Ann Donahue from Assumption, Ashley Brooks from Clark Atlanta, Kate Stromberg, Ali Skayhan and Anne Pietkiewicz represented Florida Southern and University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez saw Maria Rodriguez and Carolina Guerrero make the squad.
