May the Course Be With You: Northup Finishes Top-10 at SSC Cross Country Championship

Tampa, Fla. – Lynn University's cross country team posted program-bests in the 6K Sunshine State Conference Championship to finish sixth overall on Saturday morning.  Sarah Northup put forth the program's third-fastest SSC Championship time in earning All-Championship recognition.

"We had perfect conditions today for our cross country championships and the team took advantage, making me extremely proud of how they performed," said head coach Niki Alvarez. "It's exciting to see such a young team learn to work together. I look forward to taking [Sarah] Northup to Alabama to see if Lynn can make back-to-back appearances at the national championships."

A sophomore out of Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla., Northup continued her rapid rise as one of the top runners in Lynn's history by crossing the finish line in a time of 23:27.  She topped her previous SSC time by two minutes and finished sixth overall, tying for the best finish in school history.  Northup has now qualified for the NCAA South Region Tournament.

Gabriella Wuyke holds the school record at a SSC Championship with times of 22:35 and 22:54.90, both of which earned her top-10 finishes.

Lynn's remaining roster all participated in their first career 6k races with dual-sport stars Cydney Schmit and Rebecca Matthews pacing the group.  Schmidt turned in the fourth-fastest time at 25:38.80 to finish 32nd overall while Matthews logged the fifth-fastest time after reaching the finish line in 25:53.60 to place 37th.

Missy Montgomery was clocked at 29:27.10 in 62nd place while Aliye Muhammed Menzies (30:56.30) and Savannah Maier (31.16.90) placed 64th and 65th, respectively.

Lynn had a total time of 2:15.22.8, an average time of 27:04.56, both program records for a SSC Championship and a 6k race, and 149 total points, just missing fifth place ahead of Florida Tech (145) by four points.  Last season the Fighting Knights ran a total time of 2:19.04 with an average time of 27.84.  Saint Leo took the SSC title with 36 points over Tampa (37) with Nova Southeastern (75), Florida Southern (136).  Rollins rounded out the championship with 171 points.
