Cross Country Signs Five Freshman for 2016 Season

BOCA RATON, Fla. – First-year head Lynn University cross country and track coach Chris Wood has added five new faces to the roster for the upcoming 2016 campaign. Natalie Beck, Breanne Dejong, Courtney Morin, Sydney Parks and Christina Sylvester join four returners from last year's squad. 

"This is a very exciting year for this program," said Wood. "With the recently announced addition of track and the incoming runners, we are going to be much more of a force to deal with in the conference this year."

Natalie Beck
5-6 | Freshman
Surprise, Az. / Willow Canyon High School

Beck, a Surprise, Ariz., product heads to Lynn after running cross country and track at Willow Canyon High School.  She ran her best 2-mile time when she clocked a 12:07. Her best 5k time came during Beck's junior year where she took 11th place at the AIA Division I Sectional, running a 20:17.  In total Beck, finished in the top-10 of 11 races during her time at Willow Canyon.

From the Coach: "Natalie is a great runner and person. She will have a great career here and will lead this team with her actions."


Breanne Dejong
5-5 | Freshman
Ft. Langley, British Colombia, Canada / Walnut Grove Secondary School

Dejong comes to Lynn following a four-year cross country and track career at Walnut Grove Secondary School. The Ft. Langley, British Columbia, Canada, runner has a personal-best 5k time of 18:30 and has also set a personal-record time in the 1.5k Steeplechase of 6:20.95 at the BC HS Championships.

From the Coach: "Breanne has been heavily involved in club track as a high school athlete and brings with her a ton of big meet experience. She will be our rock on race day."



Courtney Morin
5-5 | Freshman
Naugatuck, Conn. / Naugatuck High School

Morin, an incoming runner from Naugatuck High School, was named All-Naugatuck Valley League during her high school career. Morin set her PR 5k time at the Naugatuck Valley League Championships, clocking in at 21:10.97.

From the Coach: "Courtney comes from a very competitive part of Connecticut where the courses are very challenging and the weather ranges from 90 degrees at the start of the season to 25 at the end. She will be ready for anything."

 

Sydney Parks
5-4 | Freshman
Exmore, Va. / Broadwater Academy

Parks joins the team after running cross country and track all four years at Broadwater Academy. She was a member of the 4x800m relay team that won the 2016 VISAA State Track and Field meet with a time of 10:52.37. This victory marked Broadwater's first-ever state championship in a relay event.  The Exmore, Va., runner set her personal-best time in the 5k where she ran a 20:36.34 for fourth place. Parks notched 14 top-five finishes in the 5k.

From the Coach: "Sydney is a work-horse. All of our conversations this past summer have been about how she can get more work in and how can she get around a set-back."

 

Christina Sylvester
5-3 | Freshman
Monroe, Conn. / St. Joseph High School

Sylvester completes this year's recruiting class after running track and cross country at St. Joseph High School. She had her career-best time when she ran the 400m in 1:03. Sylvester's top 5k time came at the CIAC Class SS Cross Country Class Championships where she ran a time of 26:32.

From the Coach: "Christina is our wildcard. She has the potential to drop five minutes off a 5k from the start to the end of the season."

 

The team begins its season at the FAU Cross Country Invitational on Friday, Sept. 2 at 6:00 p.m.
