O’Brien Earns Defensive Player of the Week Honors

Melbourne, Fla. – After three consecutive victories, Lynn University men's basketball forward Kevin O'Brien has been named the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday.

O'Brien's strong defensive play helped the Fighting Knights lock down wins in all three outings this week. O'Brien had a team-high four blocks, hauled in 27 rebounds (21 defensive) and chipped in three steals. He also played a key part offensively, ranking second on the team at 14 points per game with a team-high eight three-pointers.

The redshirt-sophomore has his best overall showing of the week on Tuesday in an 81-65 victory over Miles when he led the way with a career-high 22 points behind a 6-of-12 effort from beyond the arc and rounded out a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds while adding two assists, two steals and a block.

The Fighting Knights also picked up a huge 57-56 upset win over undefeated and ninth-ranked Drury on Saturday night, marking the first win against a top-10 team in over six years. O'Brien and the Lynn defense not only limited the Panthers offense that came into the night putting up nearly 85 points per game, but completely shut down the Panthers' main scoring threat, Tevin Foster, who came into the game averaging over 18 points and nearly five assists per game. Foster played all but two minutes in the contest and finished with two points, two assists and four turnovers. O'Brien had two key blocks and a steal while flirting with a double-double.

The Miami, Fla., product picks up the first weekly conference honor of his career. The Blue and White lock down SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive announcement as teammate and fellow front court starter Vieux Kande was selected last week.

Riding a four-game winning streak, the Fighting Knights are 6-4 overall, 1-3 in the SSC. They return to action on Friday, Dec. 30 with a 7:30 p.m. home contest against Florida Tech.
