Volleyball Falls To Tampa in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Box Score

Tampa, Fla. – Lynn University's volleyball team fell to No. 2 Tampa in three sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-13) Friday night at the Spartans' Bob Martinez Center. LU ends the 2010 season with a 21-10 overall record.

Chelsey Semprini led the Fighting Knights with seven kills while Sophie Gagnon and Katie Bradley added six each.  Pratt led the squad with a .364 hitting percentage with five kills and added a pair of blocks.

At setter, Devon Woolard recorded 20 assists and eight digs while Lacy Redwine had a team-high 13 digs.

Pratt had a perfect first set on the offensive side with three kills on three swings but she was offset by a .364 hitting percentage by Tampa as well as seven total blocks.  Down 12-7, The Fighting Knights scored three straight points on kills by Pratt, Kala Abdell and Gagnon, but the two-point margin was as close as LU would get.  The Spartans then went on an 8-0 run and finished the set, 25-14 with a kill.

Gagnon also had three kills for Lynn in the opener while Woolard and Redwine collected five digs apiece.

Despite an improved team hitting performance by the Fighting Knights, Tampa also hit better and took the second frame, 25-16.  Semprini led LU with three kills and added a block while Pratt added two kills and a pair of blocks.  Redwine added another five digs in the set while Mallory Deneen scooped up four and added a kill.

Lynn led by two on multiple occasions early in the set, but an 8-5 run by Tampa gave the Spartans the outright lead.  Down 15-10, a kill each by Pratt and Semprini as well as a block from the duo cut the lead to 15-13.  Once again, the two-point lead was as close as the Blue & White would get as UT went on a 10-3 run to close out the second.

LU hit its best percentage of the night at .147 in the final set, but Tampa still took the frame, and the match.  Semprini had a team-high three kills in the set, but they were the first three points for Lynn in the deciding set.

In the third set, the teams traded points early but after a kill by Woolard, Tampa ran off five straight to take a 10-5 advantage and force a Lynn timeout.  Deneen would record a kill immediately after the timeout but UT then scored seven unanswered to force another LU timeout at 17-6.

Tampa outhit Lynn .390 to .085 and outblocked LU nine to four, but had just two after the opening set.
