Box Score Saint Leo, Fla. - Lynn University's women's basketball team defeated Saint Leo University, 52-39, Sunday afternoon at the Lions' Bowman Center. The Fighting Knights improve to 7-4 overall and even their Sunshine State Conference record to 1-1. SLU falls to 7-5 and 0-2 in the SSC.
The Fighting Knights proved that sometimes a good defense is the best offense as Lynn shot just 30.4% from the floor and forced 25 turnovers.
Chelsea Patterson led Lynn with 16 points on just 4-14 shooting but made all six of her free throws. Marquis Lee also finished in double figures with 13 points and made 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Amanda Schultz and Quanisha Dixon also chipped in, combining for 16 points and 14 rebounds.
After trailing early on, Lynn took the lead with 16 minutes to go in the first half and never trailed from then. LU would extend its lead to double digits only to have it taken away as SLU went on a run to tie the game at 37 with 5:58 to go.
Head Coach Niki Washington then called a timeout and re-inserted Patterson into the game and Lynn took advantage and closed the game on a 15-2 run.
The Fighting Knights went into the locker room with a 29-20 lead led by Patterson with nine points and both Schultz and Lee with seven. LU shot just 30% in the first half but made up for it by capitalizing at the free throw line going 9-of-10 from the charity stripe in the first stanza.
LU is back in action on Wednesday, January 5, when they travel to local rival Palm Beach Atlantic for a 5:30 pm tip.
