Miami Shores, Fla. – For the second time this season, Lynn University's women's basketball team lost in heart-breaking fashion. The Fighting Knights fell 54-52 to rival Barry on Saturday afternoon following a shot by Adrienne Hicks with .5 seconds remaining. Chelsea Patterson led LU with 12 points but watched as her team dropped to 8-9 overall and 2-5 in Sunshine State Conference play.
The Blue & White defense came out blanketing their opponent, holding Barry (8-9, 1-6 SSC) 37% shooting in the opening stanza while one player had all of the Bucs field goals until 4:45 of the half.
Following a pair of misses, Patterson found her stroke, knocking down four first-half field goals. The Knights led by as many as nine points but the Bucs closed the gap during a two minute span, tying the game at 20 with. Patterson got LU back up top heading into the locker room when she knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the arc as time was expiring to give her team a 26-23 lead.
Barry started a 6-0 run out of the break to jump out to its first lead, 31-26, since the opening basket of the game. The Knights managed an 8-2 counter to go back on top but the back-and-forth lead changing had begun.
Over the last 10 minutes of the game, the lead changed six times. Two shots by Hicks at the free-throw line put BU up 52-49 with 54 seconds left. Quanisha Dixon answered the call and knotted the game at 52 when she came out of a timeout and buried a three-pointer from the top of the arc.
Hicks, though, got the victory for the Bucs when with four seconds remaining she drove the lane and put up a last-ditch attempt to win the game.
Lynn and Barry each shot 43.8% from the field (21-of-48) with LU knocking down 41.2% from downtown but the main difference came at the free-throw line, where BU hit 90% of its shots. LU previously lost on a last-second shot at Palm Beach Atlantic.
