Men's Hoops Falls To Eckerd

St. Petersburg, Fla. – Lynn University's men's basketball team fell to Eckerd College, 69-67, Saturday afternoon at the McArthur Center.   The Fighting Knights fall to 4-15 with a 2-7 mark in the Sunshine State Conference while the Tritons improve to 15-4, 6-3 in the SSC.

After trading leads throughout the second half, Eckerd took a one-point lead, 58 with just under five minutes left.

The teams would trade baskets until Terrell Williams made a layup with 1:34 remaining to give Lynn a 67-65 advantage.

On the very next possession, Eckerd had an inbounds pass with one second left on the shot clock.  The inbounds pass went to John Harper who dribbled and took the shot.  Eckerd got the rebound and a technical was assessed to the Lynn bench for arguing a shot clock violation.

Eckerd made both technicals to tie the game and kept possession.  Lynn was whistled for another foul on the possession after the technical and made one free throw and went up one 68-67 with 54 seconds left.

After a missed three by Lynn, Eckerd made another free throw to go up 69-67 with 29 seconds left.

With four seconds left, Josh Garcia missed a three but Cameron McCallum was fouled on the rebound, giving him two free throws.  He missed the first and missed the second on purpose, as Lynn was unable to get the loose ball.

Terrell Williams, one of three Fighting Knights to foul out, led LU with 14 points while Cameron McCallum had 12 and Josh Garcia added 10.

Lynn outshot Eckerd 45.1% to 40.8% but Eckerd held a huge advantage on free throws, making 25-38 compared to 15-27.  Eckerd outrebounded Lynn, 45-27.

Eckerd led very early in the first but Lynn went on a 14-6 run, capped by a trey by Kennedy to take a 19-12 lead with 8:57 left to go.  That advantage would be shortly lived, however, as Eckerd then went on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to regain the advantage.

The teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the opening half until a slam by Chris Watson gave Lynn a two-point lead with 33 seconds left.  After a jumper by Eckerd, Hall raced down the court and drew a foul with 0.6 seconds and sunk a free throw to give Lynn the 31-30 lead at the half.

The teams shot nearly identical in the opening stanza with Lynn going 10-22 for 45.5% while Eckerd went 11-24 for 45.8%.  A very fast-paced first half also led to 23 fouls and 24 combined turnovers between the two teams.
