Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – Despite getting a career-high 30 points from Chelsea Patterson, Lynn University's women's basketball team fell 90-71 to Florida Southern on Saturday night. Patterson became the first Fighting Knight in four years to score 30 points. Lynn drops to 10-12 overall and 4-8 in the Sunshine State Conference.
It was a run-n-gun first half as the two squads combined for 79 points. Patterson was at the top of her game early, going 7-for-8 from the field for 15 points. Joining her in double-figures was Quanisha Dixon, who posted 11 points and three steals in the opening stanza.
Florida Southern raced out to a six-point advantage and led by as many as 11 in the first half but Lynn was able to claw its way back each time, tying the game four times and taking one lead before ceding the lead, 42-37, at the break.
A 10-2 run by the Moccasins to begin the second stanza put the Knights down by 15 before Patterson cut the deficit to 11 with a pair of free-throws and jumper in the paint. Unfortunately for LU, Florida Southern (18-4, 10-2 SSC) went on another huge run, this time 18-2, that put the game out of reach.
With 23 points and four minutes remaining, it was unclear whether or not Patterson would best her previous career-high of 28. But the senior from Largo, Fla., knocked down a jumper in the paint, hit two free-throws then nailed a three from the right wing to reach the 30-point plateau. She finished 12-of-16 from the field, 2-for-3 from downtown and 4-of-5 at the charity stripe. Sarah Mahan was the last to reach 30 points on February 7, 2007 at Barry.
Dixon closed out with 19 points and five steals while Kira Harvey chipped in 15 points. Emmea Cannon paced the Mocs with a 21-point, 11 rebound effort and was joined by Michaela Hawley with 20 points and nine boards.
Lynn shot 41.4% from the field and Florida Southern made 44.9% of its shots.
The Fighting Knights return to the court on Wednesday, February 16, at 5:30 p.m. when they host Florida Tech. Fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.LynnFightingKnights.com and selecting "Game Central."
