West Palm Beach, Fla. – Lynn University's women's basketball team fell 64-53 to Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday afternoon. Charla Nelson-James was one of the few bright spots with her sixth double-double of the season after posting career-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. The Fighting Knights drop to 7-6 overall while the Sailfish improve to 6-11 on the year.
Turnovers hurt the Blue & White from the get-go as LU turned the ball over 12 times in the opening period and 18 overall.
Neither team was able to pull away in the first half with Palm Beach Atlantic owning the largest lead of seven, 30-23, when it headed to the locker room at the break. LaKendra Jones gave the Fighting Knights their largest advantage of the game, a 21-18 lead, with 8:19 left in the period but a 12-2 Sailfish run to end the half halted LU's momentum.
Despite hitting just 1-of-6 shots from the field, Lee was able to grab six rebounds and record one block and one steal in the opening 20 minutes of play. She finished with seven points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Foul trouble plagued Palm Beach Atlantic's Selethia Jackson for much of the game and Nelson-James took advantage of the size differential. The 6-foot-2 Winter Haven, Fla., product had six inches over the next PBA defender and bullied around PBA in the paint. She was 10-of-15 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free-throw line while adding two blocks.
Costly turnovers and the Sailfish's hot hand in the second half carried PBA to a double-digit lead minutes into the final period. A pair of Nelson-James free-throws at the 15:37 mark would be the last single-digit deficit for LU as Palm Beach Atlantic blew open the game to go up by as many as 20 points.
The Fighting Knights return to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 11, at 5:30 p.m. when they host nationally-ranked Rollins College. Fans can watch the game live by selecting the Game Central icon at LynnFightingKnights.com.
