BOCA RATON, Fla. – A goal by Simon Gubisch in the 88th minute helped Lynn University's fourth-ranked men's soccer team defeat longtime rival Barry 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon. The Fighting Knights improve to 20-8-3 all-time against the Buccaneers and move to 14-2 overall on the season.
With time winding down and the match appearing as though it would head to overtime, Johnny Mertl earned a free kick by getting tripped-up near 40-yards from net on the left sideline. Michael Kutscher squared up the ball and lofted a cross over the defense where Gubisch leaped over his defender and headed an attempt on net.
Barry's Fred Perez made a fantastic initial save to the chest but the ball remained loose inside the six-yard box and Gubisch made a quick recovery to knock-in his third goal of the season and first career game-winner.
It was the Buccaneers (4-10-1) who attacked first, though, gaining three quick corner kicks in succession before LU took to the offensive with a pair of shots by Julian Halder and Kutscher. Connor Randel gave Barry its first serious scoring chance in the 34th minute with a low line drive of a shot from the far left wing but Matt DiCerbo turned away the attempt with a diving punch save.
Lynn had several chances in the second half but Perez was able to thwart the Fighting Knights with several stops. Perez logged four saves while DiCerbo picked up two saves for his seventh shutout of the season.
The Fighting Knights outshot the Buccaneers 13-5 but managed one corner kick to Barry's six.
Lynn returns to the pitch for its final regular season match of the year on Saturday, October 27, at 3:30 p.m. at FAU Field when it hosts Florida Tech. The Blue & White will also honor their 14 seniors in a pregame ceremony. Fans can watch the action live at LynnFightingKnights.com.
