St. Petersburg, Fla. – Two goals in a five minute span carried Lynn University's fourth-ranked men's soccer team to a 2-0 rain-soaked victory over Eckerd on Wednesday. AB Magnusson scored his first career goal while Jack Winter found the back of the net for the third time in the last four games. The Fighting Knights improve to 10-1-0 overall and 5-1-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Looking to rebound following its first loss of the season, LU went after Eckerd (4-5-1, 2-2-1 SSC) aggressively in hopes of an early goal. Returns were paid in the 11th minute off the head of Magnusson. Winter hooked in a corner kick from the left flag to the right post where Magnusson was waiting for the eventual game-winner.
Winter wasn't through for the Blue & White. Five minutes later the sophomore forward collected a cross-field pass near the top left corner of the box and made a quick turn towards goal. One touch later, Winter ripped a shot that skidded off the turf and past Triton's keeper Andrew Hoffer for his fourth goal of the season.
With the game in hand, Eckerd began to unravel, drawing two red cards to play two men down the entire second half. Lynn controlled the pace with the two-man advantage to earn its eighth shutout of the year.
Making his first career start in goal, Harris Smiler stopped one shot while the defensive unit of Magnusson, Jason Sangha, James Aldred, Michael Kutscher and Michael O'Neill held Eckerd to four shots.
Lynn outshot its opponents 17-4 and held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
