Box Score Winter Park, Fla. – Lynn University's men's basketball team overcame a 13-point first half deficit to grab a late lead but a potential game-winning shot by Brandon Smith was blocked with 6.3 seconds remaining, giving Rollins a 61-58 victory on Wednesday night. Jeremy Lampkin led the Fighting Knights with 19 points while Josh Garcia and Smith each chipped in 10 points apiece. Lynn falls to 12-12 overall and 6-7 in the Sunshine State Conference.
The Fighting Knights outscored the Tars (15-8, 8-5 SSC) 36-26 in the second half despite not being to consistently hit from long-range. Lampkin proved his scoring prowess from the paint, hitting 6-of-12 from down low.
Garcia gave LU its first lead of the game with three minutes remaining when DeMario Fountain stripped Dave Diakite near midcourt and dished off to his teammate for the fast-break layup, putting Lynn on top 55-54.
Rollins answered back but a pair of free-throws by Lampkin gave the Blue & White a 57-56 advantage with 1:33 to play. Myk Brown, who was held to 1-of-9 shooting from the field, connected on two more free-throws putting the Tars ahead with under a minute to play.
Lynn crashed the offensive boards despite Michel Vidal missing in action. Two rebounds in the final 40 seconds set up LU for the final possession. Moving the ball around the perimeter, Garcia found Smith open on the left wing for a potential game-winning shot but Diakite blocked the shot and Jeremy Sharpe knocked down two shots at thecharity stripe keep LU at bay.
Fountain earned a trip to the line with 4.4 seconds left and hit nothing but net on his first attempt but the intentional miss on his second shot sailed into the arms of Diakite to seal the Tars victory.
The Fighting Knights shot 34.5 percent from the field, including 19.2 percent from beyond the arc compared to the Tars' 40.0 percent shooting and 42.1 percent from three-point range. LU did out-rebound RC 44-25, with 20 boards coming on the offensive end.
