BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's women's basketball team twice overcame large deficits but couldn't complete its comeback in a 64-59 loss to Barry on Wednesday. Kira Harvey led all scorers with 24 points and Marquis Lee chipped in 15 points and six rebounds. The Fighting Knights drop to 11-10 overall and 6-5 in the Sunshine State Conference.
It was Harvey who helped LU jump out to an 8-5 lead after knocking down three jumpers in the paint. But a 23-6 run catapulted the Buccaneers (15-6, 9-2 SSC) to a 15-point, 29-14 advantage. Harvey and Lee brought Lynn back to within single digits with some timely shooting and clutch free-throws before heading to the locker room trailing 30-22.
The Blue & White came out firing to open the second half, using their own 12-4 run to knot the game at 34-34. Karolina Bazua keyed the offense with five points and two assists during the five minute span. From there it was a back-and forth battle until the Buccaneers pulled ahead after Danielle DeBerry and Jackie Perez hit threes from the wing.
The six-point deficit did little to stop Lynn as it recorded the fifth tie of the half. Harvey and Bazua were able to sink a pair of threes and Lee drained a pair at the charity stripe to make it 55-55 with 2:53 to play.
Turnovers, though, proved the demise of the Blue & White. Two turnovers with the team trailing by three helped the Bucs hold possession with time winding down. Barry then hit 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to seal the victory.
Lynn shot 56.5 percent from the field in the second half in outscoring Barry 37-34 but finished 44.0 percent for the game. The Fighting Knights also forced 16 turnovers and posted 12 steals but were out-rebounded 33-27. Barry shot 41.9 percent from the field.
