Rivalry? Men's Soccer Romps Barry

Miami Shores, Fla. – A barrage of shots from the opening whistle by Lynn University's top-ranked men's soccer team was a sign of things to come in a 2-0 victory over rival Barry on Wednesday night.  Martin Wehlert and Julian Halder keyed the win with second half goals as the Fighting Knights shut out the Buccaneers for the 10th time in program history.  Lynn remains undefeated at 7-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the Sunshine State Conference.

It was just over a minute into the match when Heiko Eberhardt earned the first scoring chance.  The graduate midfielder took a pass from inside the box and fired a shot on target but Fred Perez turned away the opportunity.  LU out shot BU 12-3 in the opening half, with Perez stopping four shots, but headed to the locker room tied 0-0.

Lynn's exhaustive efforts to find the back of the net were finally rewarded in the 47th minute of play.  James Aldred sent in a perfect cross from the left sideline towards the back post where Martin Wehlert headed it home to put the Blue & White on top 1-0.

The offensive prospects improved following the first goal.  Kerst Lehman and Simon Gubish each sailed shots from outside the box while Eberhardt and Halder each tapped the post.  Barry's crowd attempted to pump up their team but Halder silenced their efforts with another impressive goal.

Eberhardt dribbled into the Buccaneers third of the field, spinning around one defender before crossing a ball to the right side of the field.  Halder settled and fired off a shot that hugged the right post and ricocheted around the netting for his team and SSC-leading sixth goal of the season.

Lynn led 22-9 in shots but Barry (1-4-0, 0-2-0 SSC) failed to register an attempt on goal.

The Fighting Knights return to the pitch on Saturday, September 22, at 7 p.m. when they travel to Lakeland, Fla., to battle Florida Southern.  Fans can listen to the game live at LynnFightingKnights.com.  Don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram for the latest info.
