Desperate Times Call for Desperito Measures in Men's Soccer Win

Box Score

Lakeland, Fla. – Trailing for the first time this season midway in the second half, Lynn University's men's soccer team used a 14-second scoring spree to go on top and eventually pull away 4-1 over Florida Southern on Saturday night.  Anthony Desperito entered as a sub to score the game-winning goal and added two more assists.  The top-ranked Fighting Knights improve to 8-0-0 overall.

Down a goal in the 67th minute, Jack Winters drew a foul inside the Moccasins 18-yard box to set up a penalty kick for the Blue & White.  Heiko Eberhardt buried the shot to even the match at one.

Just 14 seconds later, Lynn found the back of the net again to grab a 2-1 lead.  The Fighting Knights stole the ensuing kick-off and lofted a ball towards the top of the box.  Julian Halder and Mocs' keeper Andres Guzman jostled for position with Guzman punching the ball towards the middle third of the field.  Desperito, having just taken the field as a sub, connected on a scissor-kick in mid-air for the game-winner.

Florida Southern (1-5-1) lost control following the second goal as center back Ashley Holmes was sent off the field with a red card at 67:30 for a hard tackle in the midfield, forcing the Mocs to play a man down the rest of the match.

Lynn kept its foot on the gas, scoring twice more in the 83rd and 86th minutes.  Desperito proved to be the playmaker on both occasions.  On the first goal, he sent a pass to Eberhardt on the left sideline and the graduate midfielder crossed a ball through the 6-yard box to Martin Wehlert on the right post.  Wehlert took one touch and ripped a shot to the right post for his second goal of the year.

Desperito then put forth a ball from the right sideline over the defense to the left post where Julian Halder settled and chipped over the left back to Jack Winter, who turned and ripped a shot past Guzman.

Florida Southern took advantage of miscommunication in the back to score just the second goal against the Fighting Knights all season while snapping a string of 591 scoreless minutes by keeper Matt DiCerbo.  Just like he's done all season, the Boca Raton, Fla., native kept LU in the match with a pair of diving stops and finished with  three saves in total.

Lynn outshot Florida Southern 16-7 overall and held a 10-1 corner kick advantage.

The Fighting Knights return to the pitch on Wednesday, September 26, at 3:30 p.m. with a match-up against nationally-ranked Tampa.  Fans can watch the game at LynnFightingKnights.com.  Don't forget to 'Like' us on Facebook and follow @LUKnights on Twitter and Instagram.
