Box Score 2 BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's volleyball team went 2-0 on the first full day of their "Red Blue & White" game and the Courtyard by Marriott Classic. The first game saw the Fighting Knights break the program record for aces in a match with 16 after downing Assumption 3-0 before defeating Clark Atlanta, 3-0, in the second match. Lynn improves to 5-1 overall.
The Blue & White took to the court in their first home game of the season and defeated the Assumption College Greyhounds in straight sets (25-9, 25-12, 25-14). Lizzy Raffa paced the offense with 13 kills while Brianna Cox added 11.
Lynn started the first with an 8-0 run and never looked back in the match. A 6-2 run followed with Michelle Jordan and Raffa each recording two aces while Abbey Brokop, Brittany Brown and Shannon Dugan also aced the Greyhounds. The team hit.556 in the first set.
Set two saw a different Assumption squad as they kept the match close, 8-7 and 10-8 before the Blue & White went on a five-point spree en route to the 25-12 victory. Dugan had a balanced set with three kills, three aces and two digs. Cox and Raffa each had four kills and Brown contributed two assisted blocks.
The final set in the match mirrored the first with Lynn taking a commanding start and setting the tempo early. Lynn led by as many as 13 in the 25-14 decider. Cox continued to be a presence at the net with three assisted blocks and six kills in the set and Brokop had 11 assists to go with two aces and three digs.
Lynn had a couple of scares through the first two sets but emerged victorious 25-20, 25-14 and 25-17. The Blue & White looked like they were going to cruise to a first set victory but the Panthers made them earn it in a 25-20 bout.
After coming out of the gate with a 5-0 start, the gap was extended to six, 18-12, before Clark Atlanta started clawing back. The Panthers were able to close to within one, 21-20, but faltered after LU ended the set with four straight points.
Cox and Angie Caple both had hitting percentages of .500 or higher in the opening set while Brokop had two aces and four assists. Brown contributed with four assisted blocks.
The second set continued with the same intensity. While never trailing, Lynn could not shake Clark Atlanta as the lead was never bigger than four through the first 20 points. The Fighting Knights pushed through after taking a 16-13 lead while a 6-0 run by LU closed out the Panthers.
A tired Clark Atlanta team was not match for Lynn in the third set. With a 7-5 lead, the Blue & White used a 9-4 run to put the set, and match, out of reach. Lynn had to fight off one final rally before putting them to bed 25-17.
Jordan, Dugan, and Brokop all recorded aces in the final set while Raffa and Cox led the offense with thee kills each.
Cox had 11 kills in the match while producing a .529 hitting percentage. Brokop had double-digit assists with 17 and led the squad with three service aces. Raffa and Brown each had six kills while Brown had four assisted blocks in the victory.
