Volleyball Falls 3-1 to Rollins in Winter Park

Winter Park, Fla.-The Lynn University volleyball team dropped its second consecutive Sunshine State Conference match on the road to Rollins in four sets on Saturday afternoon. After winning the opening set, 25-23, the Fighting Knights dropped the next three sets, 21-25, 17-25, 16-25, to Rollins (14-4, 4-2). Lizzy Raffa led the team with 11 kills while Marissa Tandron dished out 30 assists. Nikki Haben recorded 22 digs while Shauna Shortal and Katie Knight added 18 and 14 digs, respectively. Tandron and Raffa each recorded four service aces apiece. 

The Fighting Knights took their first lead, 5-4, in the opening set versus the Tars with a service ace by Raffa. RC went on a late run, taking the lead from Lynn at 21-19, forcing head coach Lynze Roos to take a time out. The Blue & White were able to come back and win  the opening set, 25-23, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

Raffa led the set with seven kills and one error with a .375 hitting percentage. As a team, LU hit a .231 clip with Tandron dishing out 10 assists. Haben and Shortal each had five digs. 

In the second set, Rollins took an early 9-5 lead but two consecutive service aces from Tandron helped close the gap to two, at 15-13 in the Tars favor. Lynn rallied to tie the game at 17-all but the Blue & Gold were able to hold off LU for a 25-21 win, tying the match at 1-1. 

Sara Aloisio led the Fighting Knights with three kills and no errors in the second set. Tandron dished out another 10 assists. The Fighting Knights hit .077 as a team while Rollins produced a .324 clip. 

The Tars momentum continued into the third set, taking a 15-8 lead over the Fighting Knights. Down by nine, the Blue & White called a timeout. After the break, LU would go on a 7-3 run, but was ended when Rollins escaped with a 25-17 win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match. 

LU hit -.087 as a team with nine errors on five kills while the Tars had eight attack errors of their own. 

Lynn opened the first set with a 4-0 run. A kill by Liga Strautniece put the Fighting Knights up 6-3, but Rollins went on a 9-2 run to lead 12-8. The Blue & White was unablt to recover, falling 16-25 in the fourth set. 

The loss moves Lynn to 12-7 on the season, 2-4 in Sunshine State Conference play. Lynn hits to the road to West Georgia for the annual West Georgia Crossover on October 18, in Carrollton, Ga.
