In a Liga Their Own; Volleyball Wins Two on First Day of Crossover

Winter Park, Fla. – Lynn University's volleyball team ended day one at the South Region Crossover with a pair of victories, defeating Christian Brothers 3-2 (23-25, 25-16, 26-24, 24-26, 15-7) and West Alabama 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-23). With the wins Lynn improves to 9-8 overall.

Through both games Elyse Fleck led the offense with 26 kills, followed by Claire Angelich and Liga Strautniece with 21. Marissa Tantdron dished out a total of 81 assists and Nikki Haben had 38 digs in the two victories.

After exchanging the opening 10 points Christian Brothers scored four-straight to force a Lynn timeout. Following the timeout the Fighting Knights scored five of the next seven points with Fleck and Claire Angelich both having a kill and teaming up on a block in the run, forcing a timeout by their opposition. The Blue & White took their first lead of the morning off a service ace from Katie Knight to make the score 15-14. From 18-18 there were six ties before the Bucs scored two-straight to end the set.

Christian Brothers held the lead for the bulk of the second set. In similar fashion as the previous frame Lynn took the lead with score of 15-14, this time off a kill by Angelich. In this stanza, however, the Fighting Knights did not give up the lead and ended the set on a 7-0 run.

Despite leading 20-15 Lynn found themselves tied 22-22 with Christian Brothers. After surrendering the following point Fleck provided a kill to even the score and a Nikki Haben ace put Lynn back on top. Another Fleck kill gave the Fighting Knights set points and a Bucs error gave them the set.

In the fourth round Christian Brothers started with five of the first seven points to create a lead they would hold for the remainder of the set. The Fighting Knights were able to come back and tie the score at 20-20 and kept it within one until 24-24 where the Bucs scored two straight.

Lynn surrendered the first two points of the tiebreaker but the Knights responded with four straight to take the lead. They kept the lead while holding the Bucs to a -.188 hitting percentage to win the first match at the crossover.

Fleck led the team with 18 kills on a .353 clip. Angelich posted a career-high 14 kills with only one error. Liga Strautniece rounded out the hitters in double-digits with 11. Tandron logged 50 assists in the victory.

Nikki Haben had a season-high 31 digs in the win, followed by Knight with 14.

For their encore the Fighting Knights won a tough first set versus West Alabama. The contest remained a two point game until back-to-back kills from Knight put the Blue & White up 20-16.

Lynn went up 2-0 after holding West Alabama to a -.034 hitting percentage while posting a .258 of their own. The Fighting Knights amassed their biggest lead of the afternoon when a block by Angelich made the score 24-11.

With a sweep on the line Lynn fell behind 3-0 quickly and trailed for the first half of the stanza. A Kill by Lydia West knotted the score at 13-13, followed by a West Alabama error that put the Fighting Knights up 14-13. West Alabama stole the lead later off a kill to make it 17-16, but Lynn scored three-straight to quickly retake the lead. Fleck provided the final blow with a kill from Haben to end the match.

Strautniece was the lone Fighting Knight to post double-digit kills with 10 in the sweep. Knight had eight kills and a team-high 10 digs. Tandron had 31 assists.
