Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season

Daytona Beach, Fla.- Lynn University's women's basketball team was handed its first loss of the season, 67-48, by NCAA Division I opponent Bethune-Cookman (1-5) on Saturday afternoon on the road. Sharneka McCatty had a game-high 10 points and eight rebounds and Charla Nelson-James chipped in with nine points and four rebounds. Lynn heads home 3-1 on the season and will play its first home game of the season when they Blue & White takes on Rollins in the Sunshine State Conference season opener on Thursday, December 4. 

 

Bethune-Cookman scored eight straight points before Lynn's McCatty made a jumper inside the paint to put the Fighting Knights on the board. B-CU continued to capitalize on Lynn turnovers an led by as many as 15 points with 8:29 on the clock. The Blue & White began to chip away at the Wildcats lead and closed out the game on a 18-6 run to trail by three at the half. 

 

Nelson-James scored a team-best seven points in the opening half while Tiffani Kerrison came off the bench and scored all six of her points in the final seven minutes of play. Destiny Brown pulled down five rebounds helping Lynn edge the Wildcats 27-17 in boards. 

 

Lynn shot just 28.6 % from the field but connected on seven-of-eight shots from the free throw line. The Wildcats shot 31.3 percent while both teams shot 11.1 percent from three-point range. Kayla Crawford led all scorers with 10 points in 17 minutes. 

 

A trey by Zachara Bailey would knot the game for the first time since the game began at 27-all to open the second half of play. B-CU would go on  a 31-3 run to lead by 22 points, 52-30, with 10:12 to play. The Wildcats led by as many as 27 points with 7:54 to play. Lynn closed out the game on a 12-4 run but time ran out as the Fighting Knights were dealt their first loss of the season by 19 points. 

 

Lynn improved its shooting to 31 percent from the field in the second half but was out-rebounded by the Wildcats 20-17. B-CU shot 54.2 percent from the field and was led by Kayla Crawford who had 14 points in the second half. 

 

The Blue & White shot 29.8 percent from the field in the contest and pulled down 44 total rebounds while blocking five shots, two of which were by Isidora Madzarevic. The Wildcats held Lynn's offense to its fewest amount of points scored in the young season and just 16.7 percent from three-point range. 

 

Lynn University returns to action on Thursday, December 4, when the Fighting Knights host Rollins in the SSC opener. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm in the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center.
