Landers' Buzzer Beater Gives Men's Basketball Upset Over Saint Leo

Saint Leo, Fla.- With one second left in regulation, Lynn University men's basketball sophomore Fred Landers put up a three-point shot to give the Fighting Knights their first Sunshine State Conference road win, 63-60, over Saint Leo on Saturday. The Blue & White moves to 8-16 overall and 2-12 in the SSC. Aaron Harrison put up 22 points with eight rebounds and three steals while Landers had 16 points and the buzzer beater to snap Lynn's nine game slide.

Lynn trailed by no more than three points in the opening half, exchanging the lead with the Lions seven times. The Blue & White took a five-point lead with a trey from Caleb Clyburn followed by a dunk by Harrison at 5:17. Saint Leo ended the half on a 7-0 run to head into the locker rooms with a 32-29 lead.

Harrison led all scorers with 14 points and five rebounds helping Lynn to shoot 41.9 percent from the field. The Fighting Knights out rebounded SLU 20-17 and held the Lions to 35.7 percent from field goal range. 

The Blue & White came out hot in the second half with an 8-0 run to lead 37-32 with 14:15 remaining. Saint Leo would not quit though, exchanging the lead five times throughout the final 15 minutes. Lynn's largest lead, 52-46, came with 4:41 to play when Herb Thomas passed the ball to Clyburn who put up an effortless bucket from just behind the arc. 

Harrison's layup with 1:19 left in regulation gave Lynn a slight 56-54 lead but the Lions responded with a layup by Ron Foxx to tie the game 56-all with 1:01 on the clock. Chim Kadima connected on 1-of-2 free throws after being fouled by Landers to take a one-point lead for SLU. Josh Soto drained a three-pointer with eight seconds on the clock but was fouled by Kadima on the play. Soto's successful shot from the charity stripe gave Lynn a 60-57 lead. 

Jerrel Harris netted a trey with four seconds remaining to even the score, 60-all. A timeout on the floor gave head coach Jeff Price time to draw up one last play. With 2.8 seconds on the clock Thomas inbounded the ball to Clyburn, who turned and sent a long pass to Landers who was set just behind the three-point arc in front of Lynn's bench. Landers got the shot off for the buzzer beater as his teammates surrounded him in celebration. 

Landers scored 13 points in the second half to lead the Fighting Knights to 37.9 percent shooting from the field. Despite allowing the Lions to shoot 55.6 percent from the floor, the Blue & White was successful from the charity stripe connecting on 9-of-9 shots from the line.  

Lynn shot 40 percent from the field in the win and 90.9 percent from free throw range. Clyburn had nine points, five rebounds and five assists while Pavle Raickovic pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Saint Leo was led by Harris who scored 21 points helping SLU to shoot 43.5 percent overall. 

The Blue & White will head home for the final two games of the regular season to face rival Barry on Wednesday, February 26, and Eckerd on Saturday, March 1.
