Box Score West Palm Beach, Fla.- The Lynn University women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 75-71 overtime win over Palm Beach Atlantic in regional play on Wednesday night. Shay Harris had a career-high 22 points and Charla Nelson-James logged her third double-double of the season. Lynn (6-7) returns to Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday at Saint Leo.
Lynn trailed 4-0 early to Palm Beach Atlantic but a three-pointer by Shay Harris at the 18:10 mark changed the pace of the game, starting a 5-0 Fighting Knights run that gave the Blue & White its first lead by 17:27. A pair of free throws by PBA's Kimmi McIntosh put the Sailfish ahead by one but Lynn answered back with a 6-0 run to lead 11-6 with 13:54 to go in the half. PBA knotted the score 11-all with 12 minutes remaining but Lynn would pull ahead by 10, 23-13, with 4:49 to play after a steal followed by a fast-break layup by Harris. The Fighting Knights held on to a five-point lead to hold a 29-24 advantage at the break.
Harris had a half-high 10 points shooting four-for-four from the field, including a pair of treys. Sharneka McCatty contributed eight points for the Blue & White and Charla Nelson-James had a team best four rebounds.
Lynn shot 37.0 percent from the field and connected on six-of-six shots from the free throw line. The Fighting Knights held PBA to 32.0 percent from the field and didn't allow a single shot from behind the arc to go in. Additionally, the Sailfish shot 61.5 percent from the charity stripe on 13 attempts and edged Lynn 18-16 in rebounds.
The cross-county rivals exchanged leads throughout the second half. The Fighting Knights trailed by no more than five points and had a 64-61 lead with one minute to play. A last second jumper by the Sailfish would send the game into overtime tied 65-all. A trey by Harris started off the overtime period and gave the Blue & White the push they would need, never trailing in the final five minutes. The Fighting Knights led by six with 2:21 to play after a layup by McCatty and they held on for a four-point win to defeat the Sailfish for the second time this season.
Harris led all scorers with 22 points while McCatty and Nelson-James added 15 and 11 points, respectively. Lynn shot 42.9 percent from the field overall in the win and held the Sailfish to 32.4 percent. Lynn moves to 17-7 all-time against Palm Beach Atlantic.
Lynn will hit the road for a SSC match-up against Saint Leo on Saturday, January 17, as it looks for its first conference win of the season. Tip-off is slated for 3 pm.
