Women's Basketball Stumbles in Home Opener Against Florida Southern

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn University women's basketball team stumbled in their home opener on Saturday afternoon, falling 77-61 against Florida Southern in Sunshine State Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • First Quarter | Florida Southern controlled the opening tip, but Lynn's Tifani Kerrison scored the first bucket of the game. The Mocs scored the next eight points before the Fighting Knights pulled even for the first time at 10-10. Lynn got their first lead of the game when Kerrison converted a three-point play. She finished the first period with ten points, but the Mocs led 20-16 at the end of the quarter.  
  • Second Quarter | The two teams exchanged buckets for the first five minutes of the second quarter, but the Mocs pulled away in the final five minutes of the half. Five Fighting Knights found a way to score, but it was not enough to prevent a 40-26 halftime deficit.
  • Third Quarter | Lynn shot 7-of-18 from the floor in the third quarter and sent the Mocs to the free throw line eight times. Each team committed four turnovers, but Florida Southern carried a 61-41 lead into the final period.
  • Fourth Quarter | Florida Southern earned their biggest lead of the afternoon, taking a 23-point lead with less than four minutes to play. The Blue and White turned in their best offensive period of the game, but the Mocs were able to hang on for a 71-66 victory. 
 STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Tifani Kerrison once again led the Lynn effort, totaling 16 points as one of two Knights in double figures.
  • Maddie Herr finished her day with points and matched Kerrison's six rebounds, three behind team leader Charla-Nelson James.
  • Mariah Harris led all scorers with 17 points, while SSC leading scorer Sydni Payne added 13 of her own.
  • The Mocs outrebounded Lynn 42-25 and won a slim 25-24 turnover margin, as well.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Kerrison has scored in double figures in each of her four games this season, leading the Knights in scoring in three of them.
  • The Fighting Knights have been outrebounded in both SSC contests this year.
 UP NEXT:

The Fighting Knights return to action on November 24th, when they host Ave Maria in non-conference action. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 pm from de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center.
