Men's Soccer Falls Short in SSC Championship Semifinals

Saint Leo, Fla. – Despite dominating the pace of play and the stat sheet, Lynn University's men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Saint Leo in the Sunshine State Conference Championship semifinals.  The Fighting Knights record moves to 9-4-2 and awaits its fate for the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Saint Leo grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Brandon Rivera headed in a throw-in.
  • With Lynn's defense stretched thin in an attempt to score the equalizer, Rivera tallied his second goal of the match in the 83rd minute.
  • Bernd Eilers cut the deficit to 2-1 with his third goal of the season in the 84th minute.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • Lynn outshot Saint Leo 26-10 overall and led 10-4 in corner kicks.
  • Jonny DeMoya turned away three shots while his counterpart James White tallied seven saves.
  • Chris Hellmann attempted nine shots, one fewer than the entire Lions squad.

BEYOND THE BOX:

  • This marks the first time in program history Lynn has lost to Saint Leo twice in a season and third time they have lost consecutive games to the Lions.
  • Chris Hellmann repeated as the SSC Player & Offensive Player of the Year; he becomes the third student-athlete in Lynn's history (Valentine Confalonieri 2014-15 & Jessica Bradley (2014-15) to win back-to-back SSC POY honors.
