Four Players Score in Double-Figures in 64-60 Loss to Saint Leo

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Lynn University women's basketball team stumbled in a close battle against Saint Leo on Saturday afternoon, falling 64-60 in Sunshine State Conference action. With the loss, the Fighting Knights now stand at 1-6 overall, including a mark of 0-4 in league play.

 HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • First Quarter: The Lions controlled the opening tip, but Charla Nelson-James recorded the first bucket of the afternoon. The two teams exchanged scoring opportunities for the majority of the first quarter. Chachi Guzman recorded 10 points in the frame to give Saint Leo a 14-11 lead after the first 10 minutes.
  • Second Quarter: Guzman kept the hot hand in the second quarter, tallying another six points. Nelson-James added six of her own to finish the first half with 16 points. The Lions connected on four three-pointers, and the Fighting Knights were a perfect 4-of-4 from free-throw range. Saint Leo carried a 32-27 advantage into the locker room at the intermission.
  • Third Quarter: The Fighting Knights came away with 14 points in the period, led by Nelson-James' six. The third quarter was the only frame where the Fighting Knights outscore the Lions. Entering the final ten minutes, Saint Leo led 45-41. 
  • Fourth Quarter: Three Fighting Knights found the net in the fourth quarter, as Nelson-James, Bria Huffmann and Mahogany Hall combined for 19 points. SSC-leading scorer Chelsy Springs scored 10 points in the final frame, lifting the Lions to their first conference victory of the season.
 QUOTABLE:
  • "We played our best game of the year because we were able to play as a team on both ends of the floor. We want to win, but we also want to improve every game, and we did that tonight. We have a three-game home stretch of nonconference games, so I'd like to have some confidence coming out of those.  STATS FROM THE GAME:
  • Nelson-James and Zachara Bailey tied one another with a team-high 16 points. Saint Leo's Chelsy Springs led all scorers with 22 points.
  • Springs added a game-best 12 rebounds to round out the other half of her double-double. Nelson-James led the Fighting Knights with eight rebounds.
  • The Fighting Knights won the turnover battle, forcing 17 and committing only 14.
  • Lynn also collected more rebounds than their guests, hauling in 30 of the game's 58.
 BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The Fighting Knights saw four players score in double-figures for the first time this season.
  • Nelson-James' 16 points are a season-high.

 UP NEXT

The Fighting Knights return to action on Thursday, Dec. 10, when they host Southeastern in nonconference play. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm from de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center.
