Volleyball Battles Barry in SSC Home Opener

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Individually, Lynn University's volleyball team produced some of its most impressive performances this season on Tuesday night, but the Blue & White could not fight off Barry University in the team's first home Sunshine State Conference match of the season.

THE BASICS:

  • Sophomore Nicol Colonna turned in a career performance on both sides of the ball, totaling a personal-best 16 kills and matching her career-high with 15 digs.
  • Junior setter Marissa Tandron not only generated a season-high 43 assists, but had a stellar night on defense. She co-led the squad with 19 digs, one shy of her career-best, and had two solo blocks for the first time in her career.
  • First-year outside hitter Cleuza Porto was involved in the offense early and often, pounding down a career-high 13 kills on 42 attacks.
  • Libero Katie Knight matched Tandron with 19 digs and facilitated a career-best eight assists.
  • Morgan Dulaney recorded eight kills and six digs, while Cristina Llorens registered eight digs and six kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Bucs went on a 4-0 run late in the first set to garner the momentum and open up a 22-11 advantage over Lynn.
  • The Blue & White utilized their best hitting performance of the night (.361) in the second set to tie the match at 1-1.
  • Tandron's serving run sparked Lynn early in the third as the home squad took the first five points. Barry would eventually knot it up at 10-10 before the teams traded blows to a 26-24 outcome.
  • The fourth and final set featured 10 tie scores and five different lead changes. Lynn was three points away from sending the match to a fifth with a 22-20 lead, but the Bucs fired off five straight to secure the victory.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The Fighting Knights' four solo blocks ties their best output this season, while their 79 digs was one shy of the season-high.
  • Lynn dropped 54 kills with a .205 attack percentage, its most efficient attacking match since Sept. 12.
  • The Blue & White recorded just one service ace on the night, their lowest this season.
FOR THE BUCS:
  • Barry's offense featured four attackers reaching double-digit kills.
  • Libero Brittany Jaco registered a match-high 22 digs.

UP NEXT:

The Fighting Knights host two more home matches this weekend, starting with a non-conference contest against Embry Riddle on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. Lynn will then bring in Rollins on Saturday at 4 p.m.
