Volleyball Suffers Setback at Saint Leo

Saint Leo, Fla. – Three of the four sets went to extra points on Saturday evening as the Lynn University volleyball team battled down to the wire at Saint Leo University. The host Lions came out victorious in a tight contest as the Fighting Knights fell in Sunshine State Conference action, 3-1. Lydia West had a solid showing on both sides of the ball, leading the team with 15 kills and a career-high 10 blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Set 1 | Lynn featured a balanced attack in the opening frame, but it was Saint Leo's efficiency that downed the Fighting Knights as the Lions posted their best attack clip of the night (.250). Following a 17-17 tie, Saint Leo seized control and held on for the first advantage.
  • Set 2 | A trio of attack errors had the Blue and White off to a slow start but the away side fought back to grab its first lead of the second at 14-13. The score remained close into extras until Britt Sederholm's spike gave SLU a 29-27 victory.
  • Set 3 | The third set was another back-and-forth battle featuring 14 tie scores and five lead changes but it was the Fighting Knights who prevailed this time to remain alive in the match. Following a 25-25 tally, West smashed home two consecutive kills to light up the Lynn side of the scoreboard. West finished the stanza with six kills on 10 swings.
  • Set 4 | Lynn trailed by a small margin throughout the fourth frame but held tough until grabbing the lead at 24-23 and forcing the home squad into a timeout. Coming out of the break, the sides went kill-for-kill but it was Saint Leo who had the final three of the night. West posted up an impressive five blocks in the final set.
STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • West notched her match-high-tying 15 kills at an effective .379 clip and notched a new personal-best with 10 blocks (one solo).
  • Outsides Cristina Llorens and Cleuza Porto each topped double figures. Llorens put away 12 kills with nine digs while Porto tallied a double-double with 11 and 10. They each recorded a service ace.
  • Libero Katie Knight was the only player on the floor with two aces on the night and led her back line with 21 digs. Setter Marissa Tandron had a balanced line of 42 assists, six kills, seven digs and a career-high-tying five blocks.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • West's nine block assists are the third-most ever in a match in program history and her 10 total blocks are tied for the fourth most all-time.
  • The defense's 13 blocks was a season-high, however the offense's 34 attack errors was also a season-high.
  • There was a total of 49 tie scores and 15 different lead changes throughout the match.

UP NEXT:
The Fighting Knights next head to Orlando for a weekend full of action on Friday, Oct. 14 at the annual SSC-GSC crossover tournament. Opponents and match times are still to be determined.
