Fighting Knights lose to Mocs on buzzer-beater

Boca Raton, Florida – The Fighting Knights returned home for the first time in three weeks looking to end their two-game losing streak. However, a surge by the Mocs in the fourth quarter and a buzzer-beater from Xavier Rhodes dropped Lynn to 4-3 on the season.

STATS OF THE GAME:

  • The first half was back and forth, with both teams struggling from the floor. The Fighting Knights built up a 19-13 lead, but the Mocs answered with a 9-0 run. Lynn was able to respond with a 13-4 run to end the half with a 32-26 lead.
  • While both teams struggled from the floor in the first half, with each team shooting in the low 30s from the field, the Fighting Knights took advantage of trips to the charity stripe, where they knocked down 12 shots compared to four for the Mocs.
  • In the second half, the offenses started to operate at a high level. The Fighting Knights shot 51.6% from the field and 50% from three-point range, while the Mocs shot 47.6% from the field and 50% from deep.
  • Lynn led 72-70 with just 20 seconds left, but Rhodes was able to hit the game-tying basket for the Mocs. The Fighting Knights missed their next shot, which gave the Mocs the opportunity to hit the game-winner as time expired.
  • Christian Peevy and Tommie Luke led the way for the Fighting Knights with 15 points each. Brandon Bornelus was right behind with 13 on 4-7 shooting from three.
  • Peevy recorded his second double-double of the season, as he pulled down 11 boards to go with his 15 points. Cameron Gaines was second on the team in rebounds, pulling down eight.
  • One area where the Mocs gained a big advantage was in the offensive rebounding category. They pulled down 13 compared to just five for Lynn during the game. 
  • Luke led the team with six assists and was tied for the team lead with Branden Ellis with two steals.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • The Fighting Knights have now dropped three-straight conference games. They will look to get back to their winning ways in the SSC when they travel to Rollins on Jan. 2. 
  • Gaines (8.9) and Peevy (8.7) are currently third and fourth in the SSC in rebounds per game. Peevy is also third in the conference in points per game (21.6).
  • Gaines has the most blocks in the conference this season, after adding one more tonight.
  • Bornelus is fifth in the conference in assists per game (4.9) and fourth in the conference in assist to turnover ratio (2.6). He's also sixth in steals per game with 2.3.

The Fighting Knights will be back in action against Georgian Court on Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m.
