WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Lynn Fighting Knight volleyball team posted a 1-1 record on the second and final day of the Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach on the campus of Palm Beach Atlantic, Saturday.
The Fighting Knights lost for the first time this season in their first match of the day as they fell 3-0 to No. 8 St. Cloud State. Lynn got back in the win column in the second match with a 3-0 shutout of Barton.
With Saturday's results, Lynn sits at 5-1 overall on the young season.
HOW IT HAPPENED (ST. CLOUD):
- St. Cloud hit .362 during the three-set match and improved to 7-0 on the season
- Lynn came out firing in the first set grabbing a pair of four-point leads
- A kill from senior
Emily Edwards gave the Fighting Knights a 7-3 cushion and kills from graduate
Kenidy Howard and senior
Paige Barash later gave Lynn a 12-10 lead
- The Huskies rebounded to grab a 14-12 edge before a kill from graduate
Monica Mazzoleni and an ace from freshman
Joelle Alexander evened the set at 16 apiece
- Lynn tried to shake off a 4-0 run from SCSU late in the set behind a kill from graduate
Nikolija Katanic and blocks from Mazzoleni and Edwards to pull within one 23-22
- The Huskies closed out game one with the final two points for the win
- St. Cloud jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set and slowly increased its lead throughout
- Four-straight points behind three kills and an ace gave the Huskies a 20-10 lead
- Katanic led the offensive attack for Lynn with three kills in the second set while Edwards handed out three assists and had two kills
- Lynn opened a 1-0 lead in set three off a kill from senior
Nadia Lindner and the Fighting Knights hung with SCSU for much of the set
- Two more kills from Linder in the early going kept Lynn within one
- Kills from Mazzoleni and Howard and a block from Edwards and Howard pulled the Fighting Knights to within three at 12-9
- Lynn made one final push to extend the match after kills from Katanic and Mazzoleni followed by a block from Mazzoleni helped Lynn to a 20-17 deficit
- St. Cloud closed out set three and the match with a 5-0 run for the 25-17 win
FIGHTING KNIGHT LEADERS:
- Katanic had eight kills and hit .438 to lead the attack
- Edwards passed out 28 assists to go along with three digs and two blocks
- Lindner finished with nine digs and six kills
HOW IT HAPPENED (Barton)
- Lynn hit .385 for the match, including a .424 attack percentage in the first set
- The Fighting Knights smacked 53 kills, handed out 49 assists and recorded seven service aces
- Lynn trailed just once all match against Barton and jumped out to a 9-3 lead in game one behind two kills from Howard and one from Barash
- A 6-2 scoring outburst increased Lynn's lead to 17-12 as Mazzoleni posted three kills during the run
- Lynn closed out the first set with a 6-1 run for the 25-13 win and Mazzoleni finished with three more kills during the run
- On the scoresheet, the second set was the closest as Barton scored 15 points
- The Bulldogs hung tough for the first half of the second game until Lynn collected a 7-1 scoring run to turn a slim 14-13 edge into a 21-14 lead …
Isabella Gentile closed the run with an ace
- Lynn scored the final four points of the set for the 25-15 win
- Barton took its only lead of the afternoon in set three but the Lynn attack was just too strong as Mazzoleni smacked three-straight kills and Gentile posted another ace as Lynn grabbed an 8-4 lead
- Barton kept the final set close as a pair of kills brought the Lynn advantage down to three at 16-13
- However, the Fighting Knights closed out the third set and the match with a 9-1 run for the 25-14 win
FIGHTING KNIGHT LEADERS:
- Mazzoleni hit an impressive .731 against Barton with 19 kills and two blocks
- Lindner finished second on the team with 12 kills and nine digs
- Senior
Adrianna Casados led the way with 28 assists in relief of starter Edwards who finished with 16 assists
- Graduate
Marin Black posted 16 digs
- Mazzoleni and Lindner were both named to the all-tournament team for their outstanding efforts over the three matches at Palm Beach Atlantic
