Softball takes two from Mars Hill on opening day

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Sophomore Madison Prickett posted two wins in the circle and three different Lynn softball players recorded two hits as the Fighting Knights opened the 2023 campaign on Friday with a sweep of Mars Hill.
 
Lynn played in front of packed crowd at the Lynn softball complex as this weekend's four home games for the fighting Knights are serving as Alumni Weekend. Lynn continues its home stand tomorrow at noon with St. Thomas for a doubleheader.
 
INSIDE THE DOUBLEHEADER:
GAME 1 – Lynn 5, Mars Hill 4
GAME 2 – Lynn 6, Mars Hill 2
- The two wins are the first sweep in a DH to open the season for Lynn since 2018 when it defeated Albany State twice
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):
- Lynn rallied from a 4-2 deficit with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the win
- Senior Josey Sumpter homered in the first inning and plated graduate student Adriana Otero for a 2-0 lead
- The Lions (0-4) loaded the bases in the top of the third before producing three-straight run-scoring singles to grab a 3-2 cushion
- Mars Hill tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Jessica Senn doubled home the visitors final run
- The Fighting Knights cut into the Lion lead in the home half of the fifth when junior Cameron Buzzell crossed the plate on an error by the infield
- In the sixth, Lynn loaded the bases and junior Olivia Lovins was hit by a pitch that scored junior Morgan Simpson to knot the game at 4-4
- In the seventh, Prickett smacked a single to left field over the shortstop's head that scored senior Taylor Scala for the walk-off win
- Prickett not only knocked in the game-winning run, but earned the win in the circle after striking out two and surrendering just one hit in two innings of relief work
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
- The Fighting Knights rallied from a 2-1 deficit with three runs in the third and two more in the fifth for the 6-2 win
- Senior Aymee Godmaire doubled home Taylor Scala for a quick 1-0 lead in the first
- A two-run single handed the Lions a 2-1 in the top of the third
- The Fighting Knights took the lead for good in the third at 4-2
- Senior Morgan Scala singled home Godmaire, Buzzell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Otero before senior Monique Poitevin walked with the bases still loaded that allowed Sumpter to score
- In the fifth, senior Destiny Torres smacked an infield single that scored Lovins and Sumpter for the 6-2 final
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- Otero finished 2-for-5 with two hits and two runs
- Godmaire went 2-for-6 with a double, run scored and RBI
- Morgan Scala also finished 2-for-6 with an RBI
- Sumpter was 1-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and a HR
