BRADENTON, Fla. - No. 4 Lynn defeated No. 21 Tampa in the first round of the Women's Tennis Sunshine State Conference Tournament, 4-3, Thursday. The Fighting Knights, who are the three seed in the tournament, earned the win over the six seed when sophomore Zofia Podbiol won a deciding third set at No. 5 singles.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Tampa took two out of three in doubles, as the Lynn team of freshman Salma Djoubri and sophomore Greta Schieroni won their match against the 11th ranked duo of Raquel Amaro and Victoria Sanchez, 6-4
- Senior Giorgia Pigato picked up the first point for Lynn in her No. 4 singles match, 6-2, 6-1
- Pigato has now won six of her last seven singles matches
- 13th ranked singles player Greta Schieroni defeated Victoria Sanchez, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 2 singles
- Schieroni has won five consecutive matches in straight sets
- Freshman Dolores Molina won No. 6 singles, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, for Lynn's third point
- Molina has a four-game winning streak
- Sophomore Zofia Podbiol came back to defeat Anine Wilberg, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, and seal the victory for the Fighting Knights
- Podbiol is 7-2 as a No. 5 singles player this season
UP NEXT:
No 4. Lynn (3 seed) will face No. 2 Nova Southeastern (2 seed) in the 2023 SSC Women's Tennis semifinals tomorrow, April 21, at 2:00 pm. The four schools remaining in the tournament are currently the top four teams ranked by the International Tennis Association.
