CLEVELAND, Miss. - No. 15 Lynn lost the opening game of its three-game weekend series with Delta State, Friday afternoon, 10-5. The Fighting Knights out-hit the Statesmen, 13-8, but left 10 runners on base compared to three for Delta State.
The Fighting Knights are now 7-2 in 2024.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Statesmen opened the game with a single and home run to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning
- Three consecutive doubles in the top of the second inning by Shawn Dougherty, Juan Carlos Camarena and Deric LaMontagne tied the game, 2-2
- Delta State scored four runs on just three hits in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 6-2 lead
- DSU scored three more runs in the third inning on a single, error, two hit by pitches, sac fly and a double to lead by seven, 9-2
- Dougherty smashed a two-run homer in the fourth, scoring Leon Paulino, to cut the deficit to five, 9-4
- AJ Orrico singled in the seventh and later scored on Cole Fowler's base hit for Lynn's fifth run
- The Fighting Knights had runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings but were unable to score, while DSU added an insurance run in the eighth for a 10-5 final
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- With three hits, Fowler now has five multi-hit games this season and is hitting .405
- Paulino is 9-for-14 (.642 BA) over his last three games
- Dougherty has homered in back-to-back games
- LaMontagne went 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a walk
- Lynn hit five doubles in a game for the second time this season
- The Fighting Knights have recorded double-digit hits in four straight games
