Lynn loses in NCAA Tournament opening round

LAKELAND, Fla. – The record-breaking season for the 13th-ranked Lynn University women's lacrosse team came to a close on Thursday afternoon with an 11-10 loss to third-ranked Tampa in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
The Fighting Knights settle at 13-6 on the season after making their first-ever appearances in both the Sunshine State Conference and NCAA Tournaments.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Spartans outshot the Fighting Knights, 30-19, including a 15-11 advantage in the second half
- Sophomore keeper Callista Elica made 10 saves in net and Lynn caused 11 turnovers to offset a 15-9 lead in draw controls from Tampa
- Senior Diane Dohler scored late in the first quarter and junior Mallory Jarka opened the second quarter with two goals as Lynn surged to a 3-1 lead
- The Spartans closed the first half on a 5-1 scoring run for a 6-4 lead at intermission
- Dohler scored the lone goal during UT's run with 3:11 left in the second frame
- The Blue and White answered with a 3-0 run to open the third quarter
- Junior Kristyn Johnson scored just 13 seconds into the second half and sophomore Rebecca Clark scored back-to-back goals at 12:23 and again at 10:31 as Lynn snared a 7-6 cushion
- Johnson found the net with 6:24 left in the third and Dohler opened the fourth with a goal as the Fighting Knights led 9-8
- The Spartans grabbed an 11-9 lead with three-straight goals with 7:21 to play
- Johnson scored for the third time with 4:26 to pull Lynn to within one at 11-10
- Lynn's final shot of the afternoon was saved as the final horn sounded
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- Jarka finished with four points (2g/2a)
- Dohler posted a hat trick with one assist, a ground ball and caused turnover
- Johnson scored three times with one assist
- Clark scored twice, with one ground ball, a caused turnover and four draw controls
- Sophomore Elizabeth Clagett handed out one assist with two ground balls, four caused turnovers and four draw controls
