SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Lynn University softball team kicked off its 2025 campaign with a dominant 11-0 shutout victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday afternoon. Pitcher
Madi Prickett went the distance, recording five strikeouts while giving up no runs in her first complete game of the 2025 season. Not to be outdone, the Lynn offense caught fire for 11 runs on nine hits including multi-hit performances from
Cameron Buzzell,
Kyleigh Hope and
Marina Goins.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Kyra Sunga picked up where she left off in 2024, recording the Fighting Knights' first hit of 2025 on a double to deep left field.
- Lynn scored its first runs of the 2025 season with an RBI single from Quinn Lockhart followed by a string of singles from Kyleigh Hope and Aun'Yale Howard to go up 3-0 in the top of the second.
- A flurry of walks and miscues from the Bobcats placed Lynn in a favorable position in the top of the fifth as Aiyana Hicks crossed home plate on an error, 4-0.
- Goins cracked a well-placed double to right center, scoring Buzzell from third as the Fighting Knights took a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning.
- A walk and a steal put Hicks on second base to start the seventh inning before Buzzell sliced a single through the ride side to give Lynn a 6-0 boost.
- Later in the seventh, Buzzell reached home on an error from the shortstop following a base knock from Goins, 7-0.
- The seventh inning rally kept on rolling as Goins stole home on a slick play by the Blue and White boosting Lynn to an 8-0 cushion.
- A bases-loaded walk by Anabel O'Donnell kept the frame rolling before a costly infield error gave up two more runs for the Bobcats. Lynn closed out the seventh inning up 11-0.
- Pickett closed out her exceptional day in the circle with a stress-free seventh inning, forcing two ground-outs and a strikeout to earn her first complete game shutout of 2025.
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- The speedy Blue and White swiped a total of nine stolen bases from seven different players including two steals from both Hicks and Goins.
- Sunga and Goins each recorded doubles for the only extra-base hits in the contest.
- Prickett allowed just four hits in the game while giving up no walks in the game.
- The Fighting Knights' patience at the plate earned them seven total walks including one bases-loaded walk for an RBI.
UP NEXT:
The Fighting Knights second game of the day against Glenville State was ruled a no contest in the fourth inning later Friday afternoon due to inclement weather. The Blue and White will now turn its attention to the Converse Valkyries for a game set for 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1. before facing off with Catawba at 4:30 later that afternoon.
