LAKELAND, Fla.- The Lynn University women's basketball team picked up a hard-earned win on the road at Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon, 78-67. The Fighting Knights were led by graduate student
Jess Knight battled her way in the paint for an impressive 28-point performance.
Following the win, Lynn improved to 11-11 on the year with a 5-10 record in Sunshine State Conference play while Florida Southern dropped to 10-11 on the season with a 5-9 skid in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Knight opened up the scoring in the game with a layup to put the Fighting Knights up 2-0 within a minute of play.
- Back-to-back made threes from Makayla Hemingway put Lynn up 8-0 early in the first quarter.
- Ella Fiore was fouled on a fastbreak layup that resulted in a three-point play, putting Lynn up by nine with two minutes left in the first quarter, 13-4.
- The Mocs rallied for a 7-0 run at the end of the opening frame, bringing the contest within one with 10 seconds left in the quarter.
- Hemingway nailed a buzzer-beater three pointer to put Lynn up by five heading into the second quarter, 16-11.
- A three-point bucket from Danielle Montelbano gave the Fighting Knights their first double-digit lead of the afternoon, 25-15.
- Knight capitalized on a mid-range jumper to give Lynn a 13-point cushion with 4:18 remaining in the half, 36-23.
- Florida Southern hopped back into the game on a 7-1 run in the closing minutes of the second quarter, pulling within seven, 37-30.
- Mocadlo scored the final five points for Lynn in the half, sinking a three-pointer and driving through the lane for a layup as the Fighting Knights held a narrow five-point lead heading into half-time, 42-37.
- Knight opened up the second half with a layup to give Lynn back a seven-point lead in the opening minute of the quarter, 44-37.
- A pair of layups from the Mocs' Sydney Gomes brought the game back to one possession. 48-46 with six minutes remaining in the third.
- A 7-3 run by the Mocs gave Florida Southern its first lead of the afternoon, going up 53-51 with three minutes left in the frame.
- Knight took over the game in the closing minutes of the third, rattling off seven points to regain the lead for the Blue and White heading into the final quarter of play, 58-54.
- Chappell Channing opened the fourth quarter with a three to give the Fighting Knights a seven-point advantage, 61-54.
- Lynn raced out to a 69-54 lead following a 11-0 run by the Fighting Knights to open the fourth.
- A pair of free-throws at the four-minute mark brought Florida Southern back within single-digits, 72-64.
- Lynn closed out the contest on a 6-3 run to down the Mocs and claim their 11th win of the season.
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS
- Knight's 28 points mark her second-most in a Lynn uniform, recording 30 at Valdosta State on Nov. 18, 2024.
- Knight sank 10 free-throws in the game, marking the most she has made from the charity stripe this season.
- The Fighting Knights made nine three-pointers in the game, tying their previous record of nine earlier this year which coincidently came against Florida Southern on Jan. 4.
- Hemingway made a season-best four threes against the mocs while Chappell and Trinity Mocadlo both added two apiece.
- Hemingway led the game with 11 rebounds, marking another season-high for the Colorado-native.
- Lynn also recorded a game-high 21 assists, six of which came from Montelbano.
