Late Lynn rallies fall short in chilly doubleheader against CSU East Bay, No. 5 Catawba

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn University baseball team showed resilience throughout a chilly Sunday doubleheader, erasing deficits in both contests with late offensive surges, but ultimately came up short in losses to Cal State East Bay and No. 5 Catawba. The Fighting Knights rallied to tie each game behind clutch seventh-inning swings from Jackson Tyer and Bryant Zayas, yet timely responses from the Pioneers and Indians proved decisive as Lynn slipped to 1-3 on opening weekend.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (CSU East Bay):
- Lynn jumped in front early in the bottom of the first after back-to-back walks from Justin Lopez and Zayas set the table
- Scout Simpson reached on a fielder's choice, and Jason Lashley brought home the game's first run with an RBI groundout to make it 1-0 Fighting Knights
- Cal State East Bay answered in the second, using a single and a pair of Lynn defensive miscues to plate an unearned run and tie the game at 1-1
- Lynn nearly regained momentum in the bottom half when Charlie Devito ripped a triple to center, but the Fighting Knights couldn't push him across
- The Pioneers broke through in the fourth inning, taking advantage of several Lynn errors, wild pitches, and a passed ball to score four unearned runs, building a 5-1 lead
- Lynn's offense remained quiet through the middle innings, held scoreless from the second through the sixth despite Lashley reaching with a single in the sixth
- The Fighting Knights sparked a rally in the seventh as Ivan Herrera walked and Joel Tapia-Melo delivered a pinch-hit single to put two aboard
- Devito came through again with an RBI single to left, cutting the deficit to 5-2
- Moments later, Lynn delivered the biggest swing of the day as Tyer launched a three-run homer, scoring Tapia-Melo and Devito to tie the game at 5-5
- Cal State East Bay responded immediately in the eighth with a five-run inning, highlighted by a solo homer, multiple RBI singles, and another unearned run after a throwing error, pushing the Pioneers back in front 10-5
- Lynn managed a Lashley single in the bottom of the eighth, but the Knights were turned away by a double play and couldn't mount another comeback

- Tyer delivered Lynn's biggest swing of the day, blasting a three-run homer in the seventh inning and finishing with a game-high three RBI
- Devito continued to spark the offense, going 2-for-3 with a triple, an RBI single, and a run scored during the Fighting Knights' seventh-inning rally
- Lashley paced Lynn at the plate with a 2-for-4 afternoon, driving in demonstrated run early with an RBI groundout and adding another base hit
- Tapia-Melo provided a key lift off the bench, delivering a pinch-hit single in the seventh and coming around to score as Lynn erased a four-run deficit
- Lopez helped Lynn strike first, drawing a walk in the opening frame and scoring the game's first run to give the Fighting Knights an early edge
- Lynn totaled six hits and scored four runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by Tyer's home run that tied the game at 5–5
- Petrisko was outstanding in relief, tossing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts to keep Lynn within striking distance
- Lynn totaled 17 total runs against the Pioneers over a two-game stretch including five homers (Zayas (2), Devito, Simpson, Tyer) and a combined 22 hits
 

 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Catawba):
- Catawba struck first in the second inning, launching a solo homer to give the Indians an early 1-0 lead
- Lynn answered in the bottom of the third, manufacturing a run with speed and pressure as Tyer scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1
- The Indians regained control in the fifth inning, using a walk, a pair of singles, and defensive miscues to plate three runs, stretching the advantage to 4-1
- Catawba added another run in the seventh on a solo home run, pushing the lead to 5-1 heading into the late innings
- Lynn responded with its biggest rally of the day in the bottom of the seventh, as Devito, Willie Kimbler, and Tyer all singled to load the bases
- Zayas delivered the game-changing swing, ripping a bases-clearing three-run triple to cut the deficit to one
- Moments later, Lashley followed with a sacrifice fly to cap a four-run inning, tying the game at 5-5
- Catawba answered immediately in the eighth, as back-to-back doubles drove in two runs, giving the Indians a 7-5 edge
- Lynn had chances late, including a ninth-inning rally that brought the tying run to the plate, but the Fighting Knights were unable to deliver the final hit
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS (Catawba):
- Zayas delivered Lynn's biggest hit of the afternoon, ripping a bases-clearing three-run triple in the seventh inning to erase a four-run deficit and ignite the comeback
- Zayas currently leads the team in RBI with nine, tallying three in the game against Catawba
- Lashley stayed hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and also drawing a walk during Lynn's ninth-inning push
- Lashley has delivered a hit and tallied an RBI in all four games this opening weekend
- Tyer sparked the seventh-inning rally with a single and came around to score, helping Lynn plate four runs in the inning
- Kimbler reached base twice and provided a key spark in the comeback effort, going 2-for-3 with a single and a double in his first collegiate start for the Blue and White
- Devito opened the seventh with a base hit and scored during the rally as Lynn's offense came alive late
- Devito has tallied a hit in all three of his starts this weekend, leading the Fighting Knights with a .600 batting average in 10 plate appearances.
