Thornton hits for cycle as Lynn explodes for 35 runs in historic offensive performance

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn University baseball team delivered one of the most dominant offensive performances in program history Monday afternoon, overpowering Georgian Court, 35-3. Behind a record-tying 29-hit barrage and a historic cycle from junior catcher Bruce Thornton, the Fighting Knights capped a commanding series in which they totaled 70 runs, showcasing relentless offense from the opening inning through the final out. With the victory, Lynn moves to 8-6 overall as it shifts its focus to Sunshine State Conference play this weekend.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Georgian Court put a runner aboard in the first, but Lynn cut him down on a caught stealing play by Thornton to keep the game scoreless
- The Fighting Knights struck first in the bottom half as Scout Simpson reached and stole second before Charlie Devito delivered a two-run double to right center, scoring Simpson and Jason Lashley for a quick 2-0 lead
- The Lions answered in the second with a leadoff double and an RBI groundout to trim the deficit to 2-1
- Lynn responded immediately in the bottom of the frame as Thornton and Jackson Tyer set the table before Justin Lopez roped a two-run double to right center, stretching the advantage to 4-1
- Jake Warnock entered in the third and worked a clean inning, helping maintain the three-run cushion
- The Fighting Knights broke the game open in the fourth, erupting for nine runs
- Simpson drove in a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, 5-1
- Lashley reached on an error to plate two more, 7-1
- RBI hits from Ivan Herrera, Devito and Cole Beck followed, 10-1
- Thornton capped the inning with a three-run homer to push the lead to 13-1
- Lynn added four more in the fifth behind RBI knocks from Simpson, Justin Probst and Devito, extending the margin to 17-1
- Joel Tapia-Melo joined in on the party, launching a three-run homer in the sixth to make it 20-1
- Georgian Court homered in the seventh and added a run in the eighth on a fielder's choice to cut into the deficit
- Lynn answered with two runs in the seventh, highlighted by Thornton's RBI triple and a run-scoring error
- The Blue and White delivered their biggest punch in the eighth, exploding for 13 runs
- RBI singles from Beck, Kyle Scheurer and Jorge Romero sparked the inning
- Nick Petrelli added a two-run double
- The order flipped over as Beck crushed a three-run homer
- Thornton and Scheurer followed with back-to-back solo shots, 35-3
- Lynn's pitching staff closed it out in the ninth, securing the 35-3 victory behind a 35-run, 29-hit offensive showcase
 
FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- As a team, Lynn erupted for 70 runs on 66 hits in the series against Georgian Court
- The Fighting Knights racked up 29 total hits, tying the single-game school record
- Lynn totaled 54 total bases, the second-most in a game in program history
- The Blue and White drove in 30 RBI, ranking second in single-game program history
- Lynn recorded eight doubles, tying the program record for doubles in a single game
- Bruce Thornton delivered a historic performance, going 6-for-7 with six runs scored and three RBI
- Thornton's six hits tie the most in a single game in program history
- Thornton hit for the cycle (single, double, triple, and two home runs), accomplishing the feat one day after teammate Jason Lashley
- Thornton finished with 15 total bases, the most in a single game in Fighting Knight history
- Beck turned in a monster day at the plate, going 4-for-7 with five RBI and a three-run home run
- Devito went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, including two doubles as part of Lynn's extra-base hit barrage
- Romero delivered a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, providing key depth in the middle innings
- Herrera finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base, reaching base three times and creating pressure on the bases
- Tapia-Melo added a three-run homer as part of Lynn's four-home run performance for his first homer of the year
- Scheurer added his first home run as a Fighting Knight for three RBI, contributing to the offensive surge as a freshman
- Yandiel Reyes (2-0) earned the win on the mound, tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, allowing just one hit in a dominant relief outing
- On the mound, seven different members of the Lynn pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts while limiting Georgian Court to just five hits
