Fighting Knights fall to NSU in series opener

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Lynn University softball team opened its final Sunshine State Conference series of the regular season with a 10-0 setback against Nova Southeastern on Friday afternoon at Tish Messinger Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Sharks scored two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead  
- Lynn looked to answer in the bottom half, as Kyleigh Hope, Onnalee Floriano and Marina Goins each put the ball in play, but the Fighting Knights were retired in order  
- The Sharks added one run in the second to extend the margin to 3-0  
- Teagan Riley opened the bottom of the second with Lynn's first hit of the afternoon, singling to left field on a 3-2 pitch  
- Cara Willis attempted to move the runner with a bunt, but popped up to third base  
- Savannah Ellis battled through a lengthy at-bat before fouling out to first base  
- Isabella Rittle was called out on strikes to end the inning  
- Gabriella Lindsey settled in after the early scoring, working around a single in the third to keep the Sharks off the board  
- Kylie Burden, Allie Morgan and Hope were retired in the bottom of the third  
- Lindsey followed with a clean fourth inning, getting a flyout to center, a swinging strikeout and another flyout to center to keep the deficit at 3-0  
- Goins sparked the Fighting Knights in the bottom of the fourth with a one-out single to right field  
- Riley reached on a fielder's choice, but Goins was forced out at second  
- Willis grounded out to the pitcher to close the fourth inning  
- NSU scored seven runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 10-0  
- Kayley Zazzali entered in relief in the fifth inning, while Kylee Dodson came in behind the plate  
- Lynn continued to battle in the bottom of the fifth, as Burden worked a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch  
- Dodson followed with a single to left center, moving Burden to third and giving the Fighting Knights runners on the corners  
- Hope drove a ball to center field, but it was caught to end the game

FIGHTING KNIGHT STATS:
- Lynn totaled three hits, with Riley, Goins and Dodson each recording a single  
- Riley went 1-for-2 and delivered the Fighting Knights' first hit of the afternoon in the second inning  
- Goins finished 1-for-2 with a fourth-inning single to right field  
- Dodson went 1-for-1 with a fifth-inning single to left center  
- Burden reached base with a walk and advanced to third in the fifth inning  
- Lindsey started in the circle and tossed 4.2 innings with two strikeouts

UP NEXT:
Lynn closes the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, May 9, with the final two games of its SSC series against Nova Southeastern at Tish Messinger Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., followed by game two at 2 p.m. The Fighting Knights will hold their Senior Day ceremony prior to the first game
