St. Petersburg, Fla. – A goal by Alison Ramsey just seconds before the end of overtime lifted Lynn University's women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Eckerd on Friday night. The Fighting Knights took 31 shots overall and held the Tritons to four attempts in improving to 4-3-1 overall and 1-2 in Sunshine State Conference play.
Looking for a quick score at the start of extra time, the Blue & White were not able to capitalize on an early shot and corner kick by Reanne Thomas. Eckerd (1-9-0, 0-4-0 SSC) turned away two more opportunities before LU was finally able to net the game-winner.
Collecting a failed clearance by the Triton's defense, Ramsey side-stepped her initial defender and eyed her angle. The sophomore defender ripped a low line-driving ball through a small army of players inside the 18-yard box and through the five-hole of keeper Kelly Zahorski's for her first goal of the season.
Lynn's defensive unit of Ramsey, Rio Hanlan, Paige Meggison and Scout Stow held Eckerd to just four shots, two of which were stopped by Kelsey Butler. Zahorski made 10 saves on the night.
The Fighting Knights return to the field on Saturday, October 9, at 3 p.m. when they host Saint Leo. Fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.LynnFightingKnights.com and selecting "Game Central."
