BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University's men's soccer team dropped its home opener to Florida Memorial by the score of 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon. Kyle Conrad and Scott Gordon scored for the fifth-ranked Fighting Knights, who fall to 2-1-0 overall.
The game started out with a bang as each team scored within the first seven minutes of play. Florida Memorial (3-1-0) caught the LU defense napping off a free kick when Igor Carvalho found Lucas Roque streaking down the center of the field for an easy one-on-one breakaway to make it 1-0.
Playing its defensive unit very close to midfield allowed Lynn to even things up at one when Stefan Wolf slipped a ball over the Lions defense. Gordon used his height to get the first ball past Kevin Raymond and then used his head to sneak around keeper Daniel DeSouza for an open netted goal.
It appeared overtime was in the future as the two teams were locked in a stalemate until Carvalho broke free in the midfield, combined with Roque on a give-and-go near the top of the box and had an easy look for a shot to the left post, making it 2-1.
One minute and 15 seconds later Roque would strike again for the game-winner. Pedro Luiz Lima slipped a pass through the LU defense to his pesky forward, who evaded Alessandro Salvatore for his second goal of the match.
The Knights finally caught their breath late in the contest. Harald Gracholski spun around two defenders on the back line and sent a cross through the six-yard box. DeSouza mistakenly let the ball go by and Conrad was there to tap in the easy goal. A late push proved to be too late with FMU keeping possession and defending a corner kick with two minutes on the game clock.
Lynn returns to action on Sunday, September 12 at 1 p.m. when it travels to Pembroke, N.C. to battle UNC Pembroke.
