BOCA RATON, Fla. –The fifth-ranked Lynn University men's tennis team won their second straight match to open the season, sweeping St. Thomas (Fla.), 9-0, Tuesday night at the Perper Tennis Complex. The Fighting Knights are now 2-0 overall while the Bobcats fall to 0-1.
Luca Pavanelli and Willi Wolfer got the Blue & White off to a quick start dismantling the Bobcats at No.2 singles, 8-2. The No. 1 combination of Alessandro Sarra and Vlad Cirla also had an impressive showing winning, 8-4 while George Laffey and Vlad Cirla were victorious, 8-5 in the third doubles position.
Wolfer won the first set of his match at No. 1 singles, 6-0 and was up 3-1 before his opponent retired with an injury. In the middle of the lineup, Cirla was victorious at No. 3, 6-4, 6-2 while Sarra defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth position. Both Benji Kendall and Alex Voirin won 6-1, 6-1 in the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.
In the second singles position, Pavanelli had a long battle with the Bobcats' Adrian Escarate, but came away with the victory. After dropping the first set, 7-6, the native of Milan, Italy regrouped to take the second set 6-2 and won the super-breaker, 10-4.
The Blue & White are back in action this weekend when they travel to Valdosta, Ga., to take on #8 West Florida, #2Valdosta State and Auburn-Montgomery. LU goes up against the eighth-ranked Argos on Friday, followed by the second-ranked Blazers on Saturday and the Senators on Sunday.
