Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. - Lynn University's softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Tampa Sunday afternoon in a Sunshine State Conference matchup at the McCusker Sportsplex. The Fighting Knights fall to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the SSC while the Spartans improve to 6-1 and 3-0 in the conference.
Callie Darlin pitched well allowing just three runs on four hits but received the loss as Tampa's Deanna Henriott allowed just five hits in the shutout. Henriott has yet to allow an earned run all year with the only run allowed coming in a 7-1 win over LU yesterday.
Brittany Gross and Jordan Angel both recorded a pair of hits while Darlin recorded the other as Lynn left six runners on base.
After falling behind 2-0 after the top of the first, Gross led off Knightshalf with a bunt single but Lynn would not get another runner on until the top of the third. Angel singled up the middle to lead off the inning and Megan Mayfield sacrificed her over with a bunt down the third baseline. Gross then singled between the gap at short and third as LU then had runners at the corners with just one out. Unfortunately, Henriott was able to get out of the jam unscathed.
The Fighting Knights had another opportunity in the seventh but once again were not able to score leaving a pair of runners on base.
LU is back in action next weekend when they travel to Clearwater, Fla., for the Eckerd College Invitational on Feb. 25-27. The Fighting Knights will take on SSC rival Eckerd and West Florida on Friday, followed by these same Spartans and Flagler on Saturday. Nova Southeastern and UMASS-Lowell are also on the Knights' slate for Sunday. Fans can follow the action by logging onto www.LynnFightingKnights.com and clicking on "Game Central."
