Lakeland, Fla. - Lynn University's men's tennis team showed why they moved up to fourth in the NCAA Division II rankings, blanking No. 7 Florida Southern, 9-0 in a Sunshine State Conference match Monday afternoon. The Fighting Knights improve to 8-2 on the season and 2-0 in the SSC while the Moccasins fall to 4-3 and 1-1 in league play.
After Vlad Cirla and Alessandro Sarra won a grueling 9-7 match against Brian deMontfort and Ivan Marevic 9-7 in No. 1 doubles, Lynn breezed through the remaining pairs. The 11th-ranked duo of Willi Wolfer and Luca Pavanelli dominated CJ Johnson and Benoit Paradis 8-2 while George Laffey and Benji Kendall defeated Jorge Gutierrez and Nathan Leavitt by an identical score.
Aside from sixth singles, the Fighting Knights had a relatively easy time winning all six matches. Wolfer, the 27th ranked player in the country defeated Marevic 6-3, 6-1 in the first slot while No. 9 Alessandro Sarra won by an identical score in the fifth position over Gutierrez. Moving up to the fourth position, Alex Voirin was victorious over Johnson 6-1, 6-2.
Lynn's other nationally ranked players, No. 10 Cirla and No. 47 Pavanelli, were also up to their tasks in second and third singles. Cirla breezed past deMontfort 6-0, 6-2 while Pavanelli defeated Paradis 6-2, 6-1. Benji Kendall did not have the easiest time at No. 6 falling in the first set 2-6 but came back to win the second and third frames 6-2, 12-10.
