Lakeland, Fla. - Despite taking the early lead, Lynn University's softball team fell to Florida Southern, 2-1, in a Sunshine State Conference game Friday night at Barnett Field. The Fighting Knights fall to 6-28 overall and 1-9 in the SSC.
The Blue & White got ahead early with a run in the first as Brittany Gross reached on a throwing error to lead off the game. The throw by the first baseman sailed into right field allowing Gross to advance to third. Mandi Brown then drove her in with a single to right field.
Lynn's lead was shortly lived as Florida Southern bounced back with two runs on two hits in its half of the first.
Another good scoring opportunity for the Fighting Knights came in the third as Gross led off the frame with a bunt single. A double by Lavadan advanced Gross, who had to wait for the ball to drop before taking off, to third with no outs. Brown then lined a shot to centerfield which was caught and the throw home was in time to get Gross tagging up for a double play.
Callie Darlin was solid in the circle for the Knights allowing two earned runs on eight hits while fanning four in the complete game loss.
LU is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on the same Moccasins for a 1 pm SSC doubleheader. Fans can follow the action of both games by logging onto www.LynnFightingKnights.com.
